With so many products available to try and promising all sorts of skin miracles, it can be difficult to navigate what your skin is trying to tell you, or understanding the difference between a rogue blemish and a truly unhappy face.

Here are the signs you should look out for:
1. Rapid changes in skin type: If you’ve always had oily skin and suddenly develop dry patches or notice that any moisture is being sucked up by your skin, it’s a good warning sign that something you’re using isn’t working for you.
2. Excessive redness, flaking or irritation: Unless you’re using a prescribed retinol under the guidance of your doctor, you shouldn’t experience red, itchy, or excessively peeling skin at any point. This could also be a sign of a more serious allergic reaction, so limit the use of anything other water until your skin calms down.

3. Angry breakouts: As a rule of thumb, skin does not have to get worse before it gets better. Cystic acne, rash-like breakouts or sudden persistent blackheads or whiteheads are signalling that your skin is suffering. While hormonal issues can be at play here, if you’re loading on new skincare products your own beauty cabinet could be the culprit!
If you’ve got sensitive skin, always keep an eye out for products with fragrance, alcohol or essential oils added as these can trigger reactions quickly. If in doubt, check the ingredient list and clear out any offending products from your beauty cupboard!
